Is HYROX the New Tinder? The Fitness Challenge Bringing Friends, Couples and Colleagues Closer Together

16 May 2026 10 min read

People are joking that HYROX is the new Tinder. Only here, compatibility is not tested through algorithms or messages, but on the course — running, sweating, pushing through your limits and quickly discovering whether you can truly rely on your race partner.

HYROX has become one of the world’s most exciting fitness challenges, combining running, strength, endurance, functional fitness and mental resilience in one powerful competition format. But let’s be honest — the idea of competing individually can feel intimidating for many. Eight kilometres of running and eight functional workout stations sound serious.

That is exactly why team formats — competing in pairs or in teams of four — have become one of the most exciting ways to experience HYROX. They make the challenge more accessible, more emotional and much more fun. Because when your energy starts to fade, there is someone beside you who can take over, hold the pace, say the right words or simply refuse to let you give up.

HYROX does not have to be survived alone. It can be experienced together — and who knows, maybe it is on the race course that not only a new sporting goal begins, but also a new friendship, a stronger relationship or even a fateful encounter.

In Doubles: When Competition Becomes a Test of Trust

HYROX Doubles, or the two-person race format, is a category in which two participants complete the full competition distance together: 8 x 1 km runs and 8 functional workout stations. Unlike the individual race, where everything must be completed alone, in Doubles the workload is shared.

The running sections are completed together, while at the workout stations teammates divide the work between them. While one partner works, the other has a brief moment to recover, support and prepare to take over. This means the result is determined not only by physical fitness, but also by the ability to cooperate, feel your partner’s pace, distribute energy wisely and say at exactly the right moment: “I’ll take over.”

The Doubles format is available in several categories — Women’s, Men’s, Mixed and Pro divisions for more experienced athletes. It is especially suitable for friends, couples and colleagues, as the race becomes a shared goal rather than an individual test.

LEMON GYM trainer Madara Meiere will compete in LEMON GYM HYROX RIGA this year for the first time, together with her client and now also friend, Kristīne Beitika. It will be the first HYROX race for both of them, but the preparation process has already become a special shared experience.

“For me, HYROX Doubles is not just a competition — it is also a test of my own physical fitness, as well as a great responsibility and honour to stand beside Kristīne on her journey to the next level of fitness,” says Madara Meiere. “As a trainer, I see how much work she puts in, and it is important for me to be there for her in this experience — not only during training, but also at the moment when she will need to believe in herself even more on the race course. Kristīne and I are not only training together, we are also learning to trust each other. We are already thinking about strategy: when we will switch, how we will divide the stations, how we will maintain our pace and how we will support each other when it gets tough. Right now, we are working not only on endurance by including running sessions, but also on high-quality technique for functional strength exercises — so that movements are efficient, strength is not spent too early in the race and there is enough energy left all the way to the finish. HYROX is a place where you cannot rely on physical strength alone. You need a plan, but even more importantly, you need someone beside you whom you trust.” For Kristīne Beitika, this start means far more than just a sporting challenge. It is a personal step away from old ways of thinking, old fears and the feeling of “I can’t”.

“After both pregnancies, it was very difficult for me to get back in shape and lose the extra weight. There were moments when I felt that I simply couldn’t do it, that I wouldn’t manage, that it was not for me,” says Kristīne Beitika. “Taking part in the tv-show “Izrāviens” was my first major turning point, but LEMON GYM HYROX RIGA is the next step for me. It feels like a real breakthrough from my previous life and from that feeling that I am not capable of anything. It turns out — I am. With willpower, hard work, perseverance and iron motivation. And, of course, under Madara’s guidance. She was the one who helped me believe that I could not only train, but also dare to compete. For me, this will be proof to myself.”

Kristīne also regularly attends the specialised HYROX training sessions organised at LEMON GYM AKROPOLE, which help prepare both the body and mind for the upcoming competition. On HYROX day, strength alone is not enough. You need to be able to stay calm, breathe, manage your energy and keep moving forward even when your body begins to give in. In these training sessions, Kristīne is learning to adapt her body to changes in intensity and to switch effectively between endurance and strength tasks. Thanks to the specially adapted HYROX training zone at LEMON GYM, she has the opportunity to make her training as close as possible to race conditions and understand in advance what to expect on the course.

How to Prepare for a HYROX Doubles

A two-person race begins long before competition day. The most important thing is not simply to “be in shape”, but to understand how you work together.

First, train together. During joint training sessions, it quickly becomes clear who is stronger at the Sled Push, who performs better in the Burpee Broad Jumps, who recovers faster after Rowing and who can maintain the running pace when things get tough.

Second, agree on your strategy in advance. You do not have to split everything exactly in half — a smart team uses each person’s strengths. At the same time, it is important to remember that between stations both teammates must run together. If one runs too far ahead, the team may receive a one-minute penalty. Teammates must also enter each station together — the work may only begin once both partners are present, and the station may only be left once the full task is completed, with both moving on together.

Third, practise transitions and communication. In the HYROX Doubles format, only one participant works at a station at a time, so it is important to know when to switch, how not to waste time and how not to lose rhythm. During the race, short phrases can make a huge difference: “Five more!”, “Switch!”, “Breathe!”, “I’ll take over!”, “Hold the pace!” HYROX is not a place for guessing. It is a place for clear communication.

In a Team of Four: The Perfect Start for Your First HYROX Experience

If competing in pairs sounds exciting but still a little intimidating, HYROX Relay — the four-person relay format — is an excellent way to experience the competition atmosphere for the first time. In this format, a team consists of four participants who together complete the same HYROX distance: 8 km of running and 8 functional workout stations.

The difference is that the workload is divided into four parts: each participant completes 2 x 1 km runs and 2 functional tasks. This makes the race much more accessible even for those without extensive previous experience, as each person has a clearly defined part of the overall competition to complete.

The Relay format is available for men’s, women’s and mixed teams. It is a great option for groups of friends, families, colleagues or gym members who want to experience the energy of HYROX together.

This format also makes strategy especially interesting — the team can divide the runs and stations according to each participant’s strengths. The strongest runner can take on the most dynamic running sections, the strongest teammate can handle the sled tasks, such as the Sled Push and Sled Pull, while someone with strong endurance can prove themselves in Rowing or Wall Balls.

Four friends — Maija, Lāsma, Nataļja and Agita — say that competing as a team of four feels easier not because the challenge becomes small, but because the fear becomes smaller.

“We are not professional athletes, and that is exactly why the Relay format feels ideal for us. With four people, HYROX no longer looks like an impossible mission. It looks like an adventure we want to experience together. Each of us has our own strength, and that gives us a sense of security. And honestly, we already feel that there will be more emotion at the finish line than at any party.”

That is where the magic of HYROX lies. For some, it is a sporting goal. For others, it is a test of friendship. For someone else, it is a way to come back to themselves. But for very many people, it is the beginning of a new belief: I am capable of more than I thought.

How to Prepare for a HYROX Start in a Team of Four

For a four-person team, the main task is to divide the competition in a way that allows each participant to do what they do best.

Start by identifying your team’s strengths. Who is the fastest runner? Who can take on the most physically demanding task? Who is best at lunges? Who can stay calm when their heart rate is through the roof?

Then create a provisional race plan. The plan does not have to be complicated, but it does need to be clear to everyone. The fewer uncertainties there are on race day, the more energy remains for what matters most — moving forward.

Train together. Even if each of you usually trains separately, the team should meet at least a few times for a joint HYROX training session. This will help you understand in advance how your team can best manage transitions, maintain pace, communicate during the race and use each participant’s strengths.

HYROX Is Not Just a Competition. It Is a Meeting Point.

Last year’s HYROX RIGA atmosphere clearly showed that the line between participants and spectators becomes blurred, because the emotion, support and shared excitement are so powerful that, for a moment, it feels as everyone is one big team. Someone do the race with best friend. Someone with a colleague they have spoken only in the meetings. Someone with a partner, to test the famous saying that couples who train together stay together. Someone else with a person they had previously only met during gym classes.

And that raises the question — what should you do if you do not yet have a partner for the HYROX race?

They say HYROX is the new Tinder. People meet online, on social media and even in specially created dating apps to find their race partner. Sometimes a fitness friendship remains a friendship, and sometimes it turns into something more. But the beginning is often very simple — one brave step and one question: “Let’s race together?”

So, if you also want to take part in LEMON GYM HYROX RIGA but have not yet found your teammate, dare to ask. Reach out to a training partner, a friend, a colleague or someone you regularly see at the gym. Post on social media, sign up for a LEMON GYM HYROX training session or ask someone who has been thinking about the challenge for a long time but has not yet taken the leap. This could be the beginning not only of a shared race, but also of a new friendship, a stronger relationship or an experience that will stay with you long after the finish line.
